MOABITE NOTEBOOK Two small notebooks, the size of a child's palm, with Jalil's Moabite verses have come down to us. The first of them contains 62 poems and two fragments, the second - 50 poems. Twenty of them, obviously those that the poet considered the most important, are repeated in both notebooks. Thus, the Moabite cycle contains 92 poems and two passages. The first notebook was taken out of the Moabit prison by a former prisoner of this prison, a Soviet prisoner of war, Gabbas Shariaov. In the Le Puy camp in France, he handed over the notebook to Nigmat Teregulov, a prisoner of war. In March 1946, N. Teregulov arrived in Kazan and handed over the notebooks of Musa Jalil and Abdulla Alish to the widow of A. Alish R. Tyulpanova, who, in turn, gave them to the chairman of the Union of Writers of Tatarstan A. Yerikei. Jalil's notebook is sewn from scattered scraps of paper and filled with compact Arabic script. On the cover it is written with an indelible pencil in German (to avert the eyes of Hitler's jailers): "Dictionary of German, Turkic, Russian words and expressions. Musa Jalil. 1943-44." On the last page, the poet left his will: "To a friend who can read Tatar and read this notebook. This was written by the famous Tatar poet Musa Jalil ... His story is this: he was born in 1906. He has apartments in Kazan and Moscow. Considered one of the greatest poets in his homeland, he fought at the front in 1942 and was taken prisoner. spreading Soviet propaganda and imprisoned. He will be sentenced to death. He will die. But he will have 116 poems written in captivity and in captivity. He worries about them. Therefore, out of 116, he tried to rewrite at least 60 poems. If this book falls into your hands, carefully, carefully copy them cleanly, save them and report them to Kazan after the war, publish them as poems of the deceased poet of the Tatar people. This is my testament. Musa Jalil. 1943. December." On the back, Jalil wrote a list of those who were arrested and thrown into prison with him. There are 12 of them. "They are accused of corrupting the Tatar legion, of spreading Soviet propaganda, of organizing collective escapes," the poet explained. Then he drew a bold line and attributed the name of the thirteenth - a traitor who betrayed an underground organization. In addition, the notebook contains the address of Jalil's family and the Writers' Unions in Moscow and Kazan. The second notebook, filled with Latin script, Musa handed over to his cellmate, the Belgian patriot Andre Timmermans. Timmermans was able to send it along with other personal belongings to his homeland, and after the war, already in 1947, he transferred it to the Soviet consulate in Brussels. This notebook was completed later. The last poem placed here - "New Year's Wishes" - was written on January 1, 1944. The notebook contains Jalil's address and brief information about him for those who find the notebook: "Musa Jalil is a famous Tatar poet, imprisoned and sentenced to death for politics in Germany Prison M. Jalil". These words are written in Russian (in case the notebook falls into the hands of those who cannot read Tatar). Jalil expressed himself cautiously; "for politics", that is, on charges of political activity against fascism. The second notebook is thinner than the first. The sewn part contains only 33 poems, after which the poet left a bitter inscription: "In captivity and imprisonment - 1942.9-1943.11 - wrote one hundred and twenty-five poems and one poem. But where to write? They die with me." After that, Jalil, apparently, managed to get a few sheets of paper, and he wrote down seventeen more poems on them. These sheets are not filed, they are simply enclosed in a notebook. In this edition, the verses of the Moabite cycle are published in full. The poems are dated by the author. Where there are no author's dates, an estimated date is given followed by a question mark.
