Publisher's abstract: "These materials are intended for temporary use in the 10th grade of secondary school on the "New History" course instead of a stable textbook and highlight the main problems of modern history for 1898-1918."The manual was written at the beginning of the period of restoration of capitalism during the reforms 90s of the 20th century, including education reforms. One of the goals of the ongoing transformations was the purposeful destruction of the Soviet heritage in all spheres of public life, and the process of erasing and simultaneously distorting historical memory occupied not the last place in them. temporary use. Nevertheless, the manual retains a number of elements of scientific character and the tradition of historical science, since the process of destruction of humanitarian knowledge (primarily history) has not yet had time to fully manifest itself. In this regard, 2015 can be considered a milestone, namely the infamous decision of the Higher Attestation Commission, after which one can speak of the absence of the humanities in Russia. The authors are trying to follow the changed political situation, making statements about the presentation of the material from the standpoint of a civilizational approach. This approach, despite its long existence, does not allow for the necessary systematic presentation and, due to the vagueness of the term "civilization", a solid methodological base, which is especially necessary in a general education school. In an effort to comply with the "spirit of the times", the authors also declare the rejection of "a narrow class interpretation and dogmatic explanation", by which, apparently, one should understand the dialectical-materialistic methodology of research (otherwise, there is no need to talk about such a rejection, since the textbook written by based on dogmatic explanations cannot be considered scientific and should not be recommended for use). The modern reader should understand that the narrow class approach and dogmatism contradict the essence of Marxism and the principles of Soviet historical science, although they were encountered at the stage of its formation, as well as in some publications of an opportunistic nature. Many of the provisions put forward by the authors of the manual as innovative are in fact the classical provisions of Marxist historical science (for example, although strangely interpreted in the preface, the thesis about the asynchrony of the social development of various countries). The manual also contains direct and indirect references to fashionable in the early 90s. 20th century theories: modernization, "catching up" development, etc., which have largely lost their relevance at the present time. But, nevertheless, the manual provides, albeit in a concise form, a factual basis that allows, subject to the use of additional scientific literature, to study the period under consideration as part of a school course.
