The book is devoted to the problem of interpreting the myth of Oedipus - a man who was destined to kill his own father and become the husband of his own mother.

The main material for the study are works of ancient literature, in particular Sophocles’ plays “Oedipus the King” and “Oedipus at Colonus,” as well as various mythological and folklore sources. Based on a wide range of meanings of key words and statements in ancient Greek texts, the author offers an unexpected multivariate reading of some key moments of the myth. It is shown that the famous riddle of the Sphinga (“Who walks on four legs in the morning, on two in the afternoon, and on three in the evening?”) contains a camouflaged horseman motif and, in addition, is a mathematical allegory associated with the numerical symbolism of the myth.

Particular attention is paid to the “prophetic” role of the riddle, which turns out to be a hidden harbinger of the hero’s tragic fate.

It is hypothesized that the myth of Oedipus was the result of a fusion of the traditional plot of the fairy-tale canon with an ancient numerological riddle, dating back to the formulas of the sacrificial ritual.
