The book by P.A. Sapronov is a series of essays dedicated to Russian statesmen who lived in the period from the beginning of the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century. For all their originality, the similarity between them is quite significant. It lies in the fact that the life and work of the persons represented in the book somehow developed into a certain myth. Behind him is a clear image of the one who played this or that role in Russian history. For example, an impostor-jester, a sovereign - a creator and a reformer, a co-ruler of a royal person, a savior of the Fatherland, a sovereign serf, etc. Moreover, the "performance" of a historical role not only did not exclude, but, on the contrary, assumed the identification of one's own individuality through the role. Ultimately, this individuality was imprinted in Russian history, determining its unique appearance.
The book is intended for historians, culturologists, political scientists, representatives of other humanities, but above all for a wide range of readers for whom Russian history is a subject of keen interest, who is not ready to be content with conventional ideas about its main characters.
