More info

The novel "The Adjutant of the Empress" by the well-known in Europe and Russia German writer Oscar Meding (1829-1903) (a pseudonym in Russia Georgy, Georg, Gregor Samarov) is dedicated to two most important events in Russian history - the Pugachev uprising and Mirovich's conspiracy to liberate from the Shlisselburg fortress of the "royal prisoner", Emperor John Antonovich. Paying tribute to the entertainment and somewhat transforming the events, the writer nevertheless introduces materials from European archives and departs from the official versions of both the events themselves and the role of their participants: Empress Catherine II, Potemkin, the Orlov brothers and Pugachev, reflecting the point of view of Europeans on Russian history .
