The author of the book Shashkov Serafim Serafimovich is a Russian historian, publicist and ethnographer, a representative of the democratic trend in Russian historiography. Many of his works were devoted to the history of the women's issue, ethnography and the life of the Siberian peoples. S.S. Shashkov was one of the first Russian publicists who turned to the historical study of the women's issue in Russia and formulated a number of related research and moral problems.
This study on the history of the Russian woman and her gradual emancipation in the XVIII-XIX centuries. still has not lost its relevance. The writer examined in detail the position of a woman in the family, the issue of family crimes and adultery. S.S. He pays great attention to the peculiarities of gender relations and the culture of love in Russia, the influence of European views on changes in attitudes towards women. The author brought his research to the second half of the 19th century.
In the new edition of S.S. Shashkov's book, the text has been translated into modern spelling while preserving the author's style, and the notes and the list of sources used have been edited.
