More info

One morning in Amsterdam, the famous director and writer Theo van Gogh, a descendant of the famous artist, was riding his bicycle to the film studio. The young Muslim shot him several times in cold blood and finished him off with a sacrificial knife. The reason for the massacre was the film "Submission", which tells about the abuse of Muslim women, which van Gogh shot together with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a member of the Dutch parliament, who made many enemies for herself by openly criticizing Islam. The death of the director shocked the small country, which prided itself on its tolerance, openness, hospitality towards foreigners, as well as its own model of multiculturalism. Ian Buruma is trying to expose the causes of what happened and reveal the symbolic meaning of this tragedy not only for Holland, but for the whole of Europe, where the problem of the integration of Muslim immigrants is more acute today than ever, giving rise to bursts of interethnic and religious tension.
