The monograph is devoted to the study of the evolution of the largest Elbrus glaciation in Europe in connection with global climate change. With the use of digital measurement methods, which are based on remote glaciological monitoring, changes in the area and volume of glaciation have been determined since the middle of the 19th century. The greatest rate of reduction of glaciation falls on the period from the middle to the end of the 19th century. Since the end of the XIX century. and until today, the decrease in its area has occurred almost evenly, and its volume has even slowed down. These data lead to the conclusion that global warming, which is replaced by short-term cooling periods, began as early as the middle of the 19th century, after the end of the Little Ice Age, and has natural rather than anthropogenic causes. The probability of glacial catastrophes in the Elbrus region is investigated. The probability of formation and descent of catastrophic mudflows of glacial genesis is very high, and catastrophic avalanches descend in the Elbrus region regularly, therefore, in this paper, we consider in detail the method for calculating the boundaries of avalanche zones, based on actual data on the descent of catastrophic avalanches, determined by remote photogrammetric monitoring.
