To my teachers. The one who taught me to doubt. Saint Thomas and William of Ockham. From the author To be honest, I had no intention of writing this book at all. It sincerely seemed to me that after the popular biography of the leader of the Third Reich, “Adolf Hitler. A look from the mirror”, I will no longer have to return to the topic of personality in history. However, here several factors came together that made me turn again to the personality of the leader, and more than one. On the one hand, the book about Hitler, published three years ago, is slightly out of date. There are new facts, new versions, which I would like to acquaint the reader with extremely. Even if many of them are frankly fantastic, but often this is precisely what is interesting: the most fantastic judgments have their own very real background, or, at least, a reasonable grain can be hidden in them. On the other hand, over the past three years, I have often heard from readers of Hitler's biography the wish that it would be nice to write something similar about the "father of nations." When I began to understand his past, I was struck by how many similarities the two tyrants had, clashed in perhaps the bloodiest war in the history of mankind. And, to tell the truth, I could not resist the temptation to compare biographies, or rather, let the reader compare them for himself, to make sure that, despite the polarity of worldviews, the leaders of the two regimes had very similar “common places” in biographies. For those who like to talk about the role of the individual in the global historical process, this may be the most interesting thing in the book. However, recently several biographies of Joseph Stalin have been published, of varying quality, varying degrees of historicity. But all of them have one thing in common: they give a vivid emotional assessment of his personality, leaving the reader no chance to wonder who Stalin really was. No halftones, no doubts: either an angel or a fiend. Meanwhile, this does not happen in real life. Sharply negative and purely positive characters are the lot of romantic literature, not biographical sketches. Therefore, perhaps, one of the main tasks of this book was the creation of impartial biographies of Stalin and Hitler. Not portraits of political figures against the backdrop of history, but human biographies. So that the book turns out not about politics, economics and intra-party squabbles, but about people. Yes, I’ll “repent” right away: I purposefully tried to use only “open” sources - printed, online, most importantly - the most accessible. Without conspiracy games, so beloved by modern "mass" sensational writers, without references to "secret archives", in which only the author is admitted. To find and check the information could effortlessly everyone. Finally, on the third hand, starting to re-engage in the biographies of the leaders, I discovered materials that had somehow passed me by before - Stalin's poems and paintings by Adolf Hitler. Both are on these pages. Perhaps the work of the red and black rulers will allow us to learn something new about them. When everything began to take shape, turn from sketches and notes into a system, it turned out that a lot of evidence, opinions, articles, publications, statements had accumulated in the desk drawer, which, it seems, could not be included in the main text, but also from the song, as they say , don't throw it away. And as a result, this book appeared, slightly similar to a patchwork quilt, more journalistic than purely historical, sometimes including very contradictory judgments. It contains fragments of speeches, letters and orders, poems and paintings, journalistic versions and newspaper news, quotes from memoirs and yellow newspaper sensations. But all together it forms an interesting picture, bright and dynamic, allowing, as far as possible, to shed light on the life, fate, character of the two brightest characters of the past century. Try to get to know them again, discarding propaganda clichés. And perhaps even understand them. Which, contrary to popular belief, does not mean to forgive or love.
