The authors of the proposed essays make an attempt to acquaint the reader with many memorable literary places of Leningrad (St. Petersburg), show the role and significance of the city in the life and work of a particular writer or poet. The essays give - at least in general terms - the image of St. Petersburg, as it was recreated in the works of writers and poets of the 18th - 19th centuries.

The book includes essays about major writers, whose life and work are especially closely connected with St. Petersburg , writers who made a significant contribution to the development of the St. Petersburg theme.

Of the memorable literary places, only those with important historical and literary significance or special artistic value are characterized in relatively detail.

The end of the proposed essays with the names of Gorky and Mayakovsky is fully justified.

Gorky and Mayakovsky introduce the reader not just to the literature of the 20th century, but to Soviet literature. They provide a different solution to the St. Petersburg theme, recreate a qualitatively different image of St. Petersburg-Leningrad.
