The dictionary provides an interpretation of the concepts and categories that have to be used when studying church painting. Most of the dictionary entries are provided with illustrations introducing the masterpieces of Old Russian icon painting of the 11th-17th centuries and the techniques of icon painting and icon decoration.

The dictionary represents the first attempt to systematize information from the field of terminology accepted among icon painters, restoration artists and art critics. The dictionary covers about 500 lexical units with etymology, interpretation, minimal grammatical and accentological notes. The author is not limited to narrow terminological purposes and often offers material from the history of the Christian church, the history of iconography, as well as the technology of icon painting and icon decoration. The range of lexical units is represented by the following thematic groups: creed (1), cult (2), temple (3), wall and easel painting (4), fine art technology (5). The dictionary contains information about the main plots, characters, staffages, elements of landscape and interior on icons, about the clothes and attributes of clergy and characters depicted in church painting, etc.
