Pushkin's relationship with the Emperors during whose reign he lived is one of the most complex and least studied pages of Pushkin's biography. Moreover, in a number of cases, the study was conducted in such a way that already difficult issues became even more confusing, and the research results did not clarify the picture, but only obscured it.

In this book, these issues are examined for the first time from an objective historical perspective, with extensive use of documents and works by Pushkin himself.

The book opens with an essay dedicated to Pushkin’s secret love for Empress Elizaveta Alekseevna. Next, Pushkin’s attitude towards Alexander I, whose reign accounted for most of Pushkin’s life, as well as towards Paul I and Catherine II, is examined in detail. The final chapter is devoted to the poet’s multifaceted relationship with Emperor Nicholas I.

The author is known to readers from the book “Pushkin: An Uncombed Biography,” which has already gone through five editions. The book "Pushkin: Both about Tsars and Queens" continues this cycle. Like other works by L.M. Arnistein, it is written in excellent language and talks about complex problems clearly and simply.

The book is intended for a wide range of readers. Teachers, students and anyone interested in the golden age of Russian history and culture will find new and interesting materials in it.

(Dietmar Gerhard Stüdemann)
