Alexander Ivanov is one of the greatest Russian artistic geniuses. The path of Ivanov’s ideological development was very complex and contradictory. Even in his early youth, the artist was significantly influenced by the ideas of the Decembrists. Echoes of them can be found in his work of the St. Petersburg period.

Belief in the titanic powers of man, thoughts about the people as the main figure of history were reflected in the cycle of Ivanov’s late watercolors, the so-called biblical sketches. The main work of the artist’s life is “The Appearance of the Messiah,” a painting in which social problems relevant to the 30s and 40s of the 19th century are visible from under the shell of a religious plot.

This publication tells about the life of the artist, from his first steps at the Academy of Arts to the formation of the personality of a master of painting. Of fundamental importance for assessing A. Ivanov’s personality are the memoirs of A. I. Herzen, the artist’s correspondence with N. V. Gogol, critical essays by V. V. Stasov and I. N. Kramskoy, etc.
