The book, for the first time in full translation from French, presents the memoirs of Princess Natalya Petrovna Galitsyna (1744-1837), the prototype of the heroine of Pushkin’s “Queen of Spades”, which she called “Small Notes and Anecdotes Recorded from the Birth of Princess Natalya Galitsyna, Born Countess Chernysheva" and "Diary of My Travels". These manuscripts, practically unknown to this day, are, according to experts, a unique example of the Russian memoir genre of the second half of the 18th century. In the diaries-memoirs that N. P. Golitsyna kept in her own hand throughout 1783-1790, she talks about her life, about the life of the Russian imperial court and Russian reality during the times of Catherine II, about the life of the French and English royal courts under Louis XVI and George III, and also describes his travels from Russia to France, trips to Belgium, England and Switzerland. The book contains other unknown archival sources, also translated from French, dating back to the era of the Great French Revolution of 1789, and several letters from Princess Golitsyna to children, dating from the period when she traveled around Switzerland.
