More info

This collection includes three stories about teenagers by contemporary US writers.
The heroes of the two stories are young people belonging to various ethnic minorities in America. Charlie Nightwind from Sidewalk Indian is an Indian; sister Lou is a black woman. These minorities make up nearly one-fifth of the population of the United States.

"The Pavement Indian" is a realistic work of fiction, the result of the author's poetic perception of nature and his deep understanding of the American Indian spirit. Charlie, the hero of the story, never left the city. He knows almost nothing about the way of life of his ancestors. He has never seen forests. Having escaped from the city in which he was unfairly accused of murder, he not only learns to live in the wilderness, but at the same time "meets himself", finds his "Indian essence". The action-packed and informative story introduces us to the problems that many Indians face today, cut off from the culture and customs of their ancestors and not accepted into the wider society. recognition for her sympathetic yet truthful portrayal of Negro ghetto life; it was one of the first books intended for young readers in which the real situation of the black population was highlighted at a high artistic level. The book received a number of awards.
The characters of both stories are subjected to police brutality, endure violence and humiliation. Poverty and hopelessness are stigmatized on their lives even before they become adults.

The story "Far, far from everywhere" speaks of the innermost thoughts and feelings of two heroes and in fact is not so "far away" from a young reader from other countries. It belongs to the very few American stories that describe not so much the situations and actions of the characters as their spiritual life. A young reader or reader is probably familiar with the conflict between the desire to please parents and the desire to independently determine their life values and life goals, between the desire to realize their intellectual or creative ideas and the imperious temptations of early love.
The main characters of each of the stories included in the collection, are unique in their own way and are in no way similar to stereotypes, just as the fates of the authors themselves are different.
