The famous Soviet chess player Alexander Alexandrovich Kotov was born in 1913 in the city of Tula, in a working-class family.

From childhood, he was fond of chess, which, however, did not prevent him from studying, graduating from the Tula Mechanical Institute and receiving a diploma in design engineering.

During the Great Patriotic War, A.A. Kotov was awarded the Order of Lenin for the creation of a new model of weapons for the Soviet Army. After the end of the war, A.A. Kotov returns to chess.

In 1947, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) awarded A.A. Kotov the title of International Grandmaster, and a year later he received the title of International Arbiter.

In 1948, A.A. Kotov won a gold medal and the title of champion of the Soviet Union and subsequently defended the honor of the country in many tournaments and matches.

In 1952, at the interzonal tournament in Stockholm, A.A. Kotov achieved his highest success: as a result of brilliant victories, he won the first prize.

A.A. Kotov is the author of books on the theory and practice of chess art: "The Chess Legacy of A.A. Alekhine" in two volumes, "Tournament in Venice", "Soviet Chess School" (together with master M. Yudovich) .
