At the end of December 1944, the battle for Budapest began, ending on February 13, 1945 with the liberation of the city by the Soviet Army. Long before that, in the city itself, grenade explosions were heard and automatic bursts crackled. These were underground groups of Hungarian communists, led by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Hungary. The daring raids of the fearless Syr's group, which included the author of this book, partisan Gabor Chillik, were especially effective.
Gabor was early acquainted with poverty and lack of rights. Under the influence of older comrades, the young man becomes a communist. He takes part in protest demonstrations, writes anti-war slogans on the walls of houses, distributes communist leaflets. In the summer of 1944, Gabor, while in hiding, establishes contact with the Sira partisan group, whose members make bold raids on the Nazis and undermine the railway lines. At the end of 1944, Horthy's agents arrested and threw Gabor into prison. Having made a successful escape from prison, the brave young man goes to Turchani's partisan group. After the liberation of Hungary by the Soviet Army, he worked in the Union of Hungarian Democratic Youth.
G. Chillik's documentary story "We Fought in Budapest" is an exciting story about the struggle of the best representatives of the Hungarian youth during the years of the Horthy regime.
