More info

This book is about Sergei Ivanovich Taneev, a great Russian musician and a wonderful person. His name is known and respected, his works can be found in concert programs, but his life and work are still less known than they deserve. Serious and introspective works of Taneyev are not always revealed immediately, they require special attention and spiritual concentration. A student and friend of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, heir and successor of his work, Taneyev found his own way, fusing in his work the romantic lyricism coming from Glinka and the classicist rigor he learned from Bach and Mozart. In contemporary Russian music, Taneyev stood somewhat apart; to many, his attraction to the old masters, to polyphony, and adherence to classical genres seemed archaic. But time has confirmed the correctness of his search. Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev was not only a significant composer, but also an outstanding pianist, and the first major musicologist in Russia. His interpretations of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Chopin, as well as the performance of his own works, delighted even the most demanding audience. The fundamental work "Mobile counterpoint of strict writing" elevated polyphonic research to the level of a true science.
