More info

Princess Maria Nikolaevna Volkonskaya, the wife of the Decembrist S.G. Volkonsky, was one of the first among the wives of the Decembrists, who, overcoming family resistance, followed her husband to Siberia in 1827, where she lived until 1855. In her notes, created after returning to Moscow, Volkonskaya vividly described the hard labor regime, described many Decembrists, left information about life, customs, culture and the attitude of the population of Siberia towards the Decembrists. It was her feat that was sung by N.A. Nekrasov in the poem “Russian Women”.
