More info

The name of the progressive German writer Bernhard Kellermann (1879-1951) is well known to the Soviet reader. Many of his novels - The Tunnel (1913), The Ninth of November (1920), The Schellenberg Brothers (1925), The City of Anatole (1932) and others - were repeatedly published in the USSR.
In the novel "The Tunnel", paying tribute to the admiration of technical progress in the era of imperialism, the writer at the same time realistically draws the contradictions of capitalist society. The hero of the novel, Mac Allan, comes from a proletarian milieu, a talented engineer and a man of exuberant energy, creates and implements a grandiose project - the construction of a tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean. The construction of the tunnel, which takes away thousands of human victims, takes away personal happiness from Allan, and in the end makes him an internally devastated person, maniacally obsessed with one idea.
