The novel “The Chouans, or Brittany in 1799” - the first work published by Balzac not under a pseudonym, but under his own name - can be considered as a kind of historical prologue to his great epic “The Human Comedy”.

The action of "The Chouans" takes place at the end of 1799. The novel is based on one of the episodes of the struggle of the Republican troops with the Chouans, led by royalist nobles and Catholic priests.

Having truthfully reproduced reality in his novel, Balzac, with the help of apt and precise characteristics, revealed the causes of the rebellion; he explained in it why the royalists managed to lead the local peasant population, emphasized the counter-revolutionary role of the priests, highlighted the peculiarities of the rebels' tactics and finally showed the inevitability of the Republican victory over the rebels.
