Indian boy. He is dark and black-haired, like most Indians. His parents abandoned him to escape the tiger Sherkhan. The boy miraculously survived and was raised by a family of wolves. Shere Khan came and demanded “his prey,” but Mowgli’s adoptive mother, the she-wolf Raksha, flatly refused to give him up and was even ready to fight. Eventually Mowgli is accepted into the pack. The bear Baloo becomes his teacher, and the panther Bagheera becomes his friend and protector[note 1]. When Mowgli grew up, he had to go through many adventures: he is captured by monkeys (banderlogs, as they are called), restores the power of Akela, who was “framed” during a hunt, fights with red dogs. But his main opponent remains Sherkhan. The tiger could not forget that unsuccessful hunt when he was left without prey. There is a misconception among some readers that during this hunt Shere Khan became lame when he burned his paw in a fire, but in fact he was born lame, confirmation of which can be found in Kipling’s “The Jungle Book.”
