Russian translation of the biography of Vivekanand Swami (pseudonym; real name Narendranath Dutt) (12.1.1863, Calcutta, - 4.1.1902, Belur), Indian humanist thinker, religious reformer and public figure; student of Ramakrishna.
In 1880-84 he studied philosophy at Calcutta University; in 1893 he traveled to the USA, Great Britain, Japan with the aim of propagating Vedanta. In 1897 he founded the Ramakrishna Mission Religious Reform Society. He was the largest representative of yoga. Vivekananda is the ideologist of the so-called Indian Renaissance, which expressed India's desire for national independence and social prosperity. He opposed oppression, racism and expansionist tendencies. He saw the reasons for the country's colonial position in the loss of its national identity.

Vivekananda believed in social justice, linking its offensive with the activities of the "lower classes" who would "end" "property inequality and establish their dominance" (The complete works, v. 4, Mayavati, 1950, p. 401), however, Vivekananda placed his hopes not on the revolutionary activity of the masses, but on the education of the individual in the spirit of Vedanta, on the creation of character in the individual and the nation.
Social function propagated by Vivekananda "universal" reformed religion is, according to Vivekananda, in helping the needy and hungry. The democratic content of Vivekananda's sermon contributed to the liberation movement in India.
