From the translation editor's preface: The problem of non-linear gravitational waves is a traditional problem in the research of Soviet mechanical scientists; works of A.I. Nekrasova, H.E. Kochina, L.A. Lavrentiev, L.N. Sretensky and their numerous followers made a fundamental contribution to the classical line of development of the nonlinear theory of waves. The discussion in the Royal Society of London, the materials of which are offered to the reader's attention in Russian translation, was devoted to new methods in the nonlinear theory of wave propagation, developed over the past few years mainly by the works of English scientists. There is hardly any need to add anything to the vivid characterization of the prospects for the application of these new methods, which is given in the introductory and concluding articles of the organizer of the discussion, Professor M. J. Lighthill. These methods have already turned out to be useful in a number of problems in continuum physics, even those that are very far from the wave theory that gave rise to them. Apparently, they can significantly facilitate the study of questions of self-oscillations in continuous media and, in particular, topical problems of self-oscillations of viscous and viscoelastic fluids. At the suggestion of Professor M. J. Lighthill, two articles by M. S. Howe are placed in this collection along with the materials of the above discussion; they are interesting from the point of view of further development of the ideas presented during the discussion.
