Ogonyok Library No. 44 1989

The fate of Maxim Gorky is one of the most tragic fates in the history of Soviet literature. But after all, for a writer, the main thing is not personal well-being, but the ability to remain faithful to those higher ideals that always permeate true art.
Gorky was given a great talent as a writer, which often did not fit into the traditional standards familiar to critics and readers. How many nonsense was said by both lifetime criticism and later literary criticism about his work! And very rarely researchers and memoirists tried to restore the true image of the writer, consistent and contradictory, brave and frightened, happy and deeply tragic.
And among the best in this corpus are the memoirs of Vladislav Felitsianovich Khodasevich, one of the greatest Russian poets of the twentieth century, who happened to closely observe Gorky in those years that largely determined his further tragic fate, led to the black thirties.
Gorky's character explains his books, and his works help to understand the features of his biography. That synthetic portrait that Khodasevich paints for his reader makes his hero much closer than any spells of frenzied praisers.
