The historical novel "The Quietest" by Vladislav Anatolyevich Bakhrevsky is dedicated to a short but very eventful period - the first years of the reign of the second tsar from the Romanov dynasty - Alexei Mikhailovich. The writer recreates a broad picture of Russian life; in his field of vision were the royal court and the Moscow suburb, the first decisive steps of hegumen (later patriarch) Nikon and priest Avvakum, the bullying of the tsarist governors over the common people. But most of all, the author is interested in the complex historical era itself, in which contradictions and social forces gradually arose, which led, a few decades later, to the uprising of Stepan Razin and the religious schism.
