Dostoevsky's immortal novel has been drawing many generations of readers into the realm of unsolvable, "damned questions" for a century and a half; in an incomprehensible way, the author achieves maximum reader complicity. The plot moves of "Crime and Punishment" are creepy, unpredictable and dark, like countless lanes, stairs, corridors, "taken on a pencil" by a great writer; the spiritual abysses of his characters are deep and gloomy, like the wells of St. Petersburg courtyards. D. Merezhkovsky wrote: "The reader, together with the hero, makes a criminal psychological experience, and then, when you leave the book, for a long time there is still no strength to free yourself from its terrible charm. Dostoevsky leaves the same indelible traces in the heart as suffering."
