Johann Paul Friedrich Richter (Jean-Paul) is a German writer, sentimentalist and pre-romanticist, author of satirical works, esthetician and essayist. He took the pseudonym (the Frenchized version of his own names) from his admiration for Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Jean-Paul Richter, a contemporary of J.W. Goethe and a recognized classic of German literature, rediscovered in the 20th century, considered "Rude Years" "as his best work, in which, in fact, he lives: there, they say, everything is secret and comfortable for him, like a friendly room, a cozy sofa and a well-known joyful community." Jean-Paul said that the characters of the novel, the twin brothers Valt and Vult, are "nothing more than two opposed to each other, but still kindred persons, from the combination of which he consists." The book is provided with extensive commentaries based on German academic editions, but to a large extent supplemented by a translator. The afterword contains a detailed analysis of the novel "The Rude Years" (in the context of Jean-Paul's work) and examines the question of its influence on modern Western literature.
