Inspector John Rebus spends his last week on the CID unraveling a tangle of mysterious incidents. Russian dissident poet Alexander Fedorov was killed on a deserted street in Edinburgh. Following this, the audio studio burns down, the owner of which recorded the poet's performances. The owner himself dies in the fire. Both petty drug dealers and drug addict girls, as well as representatives of the political and banking elite of Scotland, fall into the field of view of Rebus and his partner Siobhan Clark. And then the millionaire Sergey Andropov, who is being prosecuted in Russia for financial fraud, is announced. He is actively looking for contacts not only with local politicians and bankers, but also with an old acquaintance of Rebus - the bandit Cafferty. While Rebus is struggling with the puzzle, adding disparate facts into a single picture, someone is trying to "set up" him: Cafferty has been attacked, and all the evidence points to Rebus.
