On August 23, 1939, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany signed the Non-Aggression Pact, known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The secret additional protocol to this treaty, which actually outlined the "territorial and political reorganization" of the Baltic states and Poland, predetermined the further development of history in the 20th century. 8 days after the signing of the treaty, the German armed forces crossed the borders of Poland, a few days later England, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany, and on September 17, 1939, Soviet troops entered Poland. The British historian Roger Moorhouse analyzes the background and consequences of this "devil's alliance" and tries to find an answer to the question: did Hitler and Stalin really believe in the possibility of the two powers dividing Europe coexisting, or was it initially just a tactical ploy designed to play for time before an imminent military strike ? n-razv
