The book provides a systematic presentation of mathematical methods for solving problems of diffraction of monochromatic waves (electrodynamics, acoustics). Both exact methods (separation of variables, integration in the plane of a complex variable, natural oscillation method) and approximate methods (variational, low-frequency and high-frequency asymptotics) are presented. Each method describes, first of all, its idea, scope of application, and connection with other methods. Then the apparatus of the method is presented in the simplest formulation and examples of its application are given. The book can serve as an introduction to diffraction theory and facilitate the transition to reading more specialized monographs and journal articles.
