The life and work of the outstanding poet, Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky are of great interest not only in Russia, but also in other countries. New books dedicated to him are published every year, from fundamental scientific studies to lightweight and not very reliable memoirs. Against this background, the well-known critic and literary historian Vladimir Bondarenko managed to write an unexpected and controversial biography of Brodsky, highlighting in it moments that many do not notice or do not want to notice. In this book, the poet, often portrayed as a cosmopolitan and aesthete out of touch with life, appears as the heir not only to the great Russian culture, but also to the Soviet civilization, as a person inextricably linked with Russia and its people.
