In the first half of the 1930s, Andre Gide repeatedly spoke out in support of the Land of Soviets, and in the Union itself he was ranked among the numerous "friends of the USSR" at that time: in 1935-1936, a collection of his works was published in four volumes. In the summer of 1936, Gide visited the Soviet Union; everything turned out to be not as it seemed to him from the enthusiastic reviews of numerous pilgrims. He shared his impressions in the essay “Return from the USSR” published at the end of the same year, in which he noted the lack of freedom of thought, tight control over literature and public life, some frightening features of the new Soviet man. After that, the name of the writer was banned in the USSR, his books were not published until the “perestroika”.
