The young Gascon Crustignac kills the famous duelist Fontenay in a duel. Duels, as the reader remembers, are prohibited. Well, if there is no rich and influential patron, then there is only one way out - flight. Fleeing from prosecution, he goes to Martinique. On the way, he hears a story about a mysterious woman nicknamed "Bluebeard". She is immensely rich, but all her husbands mysteriously die. This story makes such a huge impression on our hero that a dream settles in his heart: to get to know her at all costs, and come what may! However, our hero does not even suspect what adventures await him along the way.
