Anthony Hope (1863 -1933) was an English writer who became famous for his adventure novels, sometimes defined as romantic fantasy, who invented the country of Ruritania. The story takes place in Ruritania, a fictional German-speaking kingdom in Central Europe. The throne should be taken by Crown Prince Rudolf, a lover of drink and carousing. The lower strata of the population sympathize with his half-brother, the ambitious and powerful Duke Michael, although he, being the offspring of a morganatic union, has no rights to inheritance. The book earned high marks from E. Lang, R. L. Stevenson, and G. K. Chesterton. In Soviet Russia, a plot based on the triumph of a drunkard monarch and his reactionary entourage over a popular rival was banned. The book received translation into Russian only in the post-perestroika period. A very rare book. Uncut edges. The book was always read.
