Isaac Babel is a wonderful writer of the first half of the twentieth century, a soulful, subtle and ironic storyteller, the author of the immortal “Cavalry” and the literary father of the famous Benya Krik from the “Odessa Stories” series.

The collection of “Selected Works” of I. Babel offered to the reader is the most complete of all publications of this author in the Soviet Union, it is based on “Selected Works” (Goslitizdat, 1957), in addition, it includes stories that were not included in any of the publications; For the first time, it also includes the following sections: “Articles and Speeches”, “Letters”. The material is arranged chronologically, the texts of works published during the author's lifetime are given according to the last lifetime edition, those not published during the writer's lifetime and published for the first time are given according to autographs.

In this edition, the works are not dated, since information regarding their first publications is contained in the comments; in cases where there are author's dates, they are also given in the comments.
