Lev Mikhailovich Timofeev is a Russian writer, poet, journalist, and economist. Public figure, former Soviet dissident. One of the pioneers in the study of shadow, extra-legal economic relations. Member of the Writers' Union. Lev Timofeev was born in the family of an engineer, his mother is a nurse. Since 1943, after the evacuation and return of his father from besieged Leningrad, he lived with his parents in Moscow. In 1958 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Foreign Trade (now MGIMO). In 1958-1961. worked in the ports of Novorossiysk, Nakhodka, Sakhalin as an inspector of foreign trade operations. In 1961-1963 he served in the Soviet Army as a lieutenant, military translator. After demobilization, he worked as a freelance journalist for Moscow newspapers and magazines. The first poems were published in the journal "Youth" in 1964, later poems, essays, stories were published in literary and art magazines in the USSR. In 1974-78. in the staff of the Komsomol magazine Young Communist, then in the magazine In the World of Books. Since 1980 - a private tutor in literature and the Russian language, a dissident. His essay works "The last hope to survive.

This book was published immediately after the disappearance of the author in the dungeons of the KGB. It was published by the American Russian-language Hermitage publishing house and was accompanied by the words of the publisher: "There is no information about the fate of the writer and they are unlikely to be encouraging." Despite the thaw moods of perestroika, the writer Lev Timofeev (b. 1936), whose works were published at that time by the popular magazines Novy Mir and Molodaya Gvardiya, and whose other texts, uncensored, were printed abroad and "circulated" in samizdat, was arrested for dissent and was sentenced to 6 years in camps under the infamous article "Anti-Soviet propaganda", was pardoned along with a group of other political prisoners in 1987.
