In the history of English literature of the 18th century, Chesterfield occupies a special place - writer, publicist, moral philosopher, historian. During his lifetime he was known as a prominent statesman, diplomat, and orator. They learned about his literary works a year after his death, after the publication of a book compiled from his letters to his son. This book became famous when it was first published. It's one of those books that never gets old. For this edition, 89 of Chesterfield's 420 letters to his son, Philip Stanhope, have been selected, from the earliest, addressed to an eight-year-old boy, to those written a few days before the death of the thirty-six-year-old diplomat. In addition, from Chesterfield's extensive epistolary heritage, four letters from the last period of his life are given, addressed to various correspondents, including one to Voltaire. The publication also includes "Maxims" and "Characters".

The book is in very good condition, with some wear on the top of the spine.
