William Shakespeare. Complete collection of works in 8 volumes. Year of release: 1936-1950 Publisher: "Academia" / OGIZ Goslitizdat. Moscow-Leningrad. The publishing house "Academia" published 4 volumes even before the Second World War in 1936-1937 (this explains the rarity of complete surviving sets), the remaining volumes were published by Goslitizdat in 1941, 1949, 1950. The circulation of each volume is 15000-15300 copies.

The publication format is encyclopedic: 195x260 mm, excellent drawings and lithographs. Each volume contains approximately 10-17 illustrations. There are no losses.

In general, the condition and preservation of books that are already 70-85 years old range from satisfactory to good.

Description:

The complete works of William Shakespeare were published in 1936-1950. two publishing houses "Academiya" and Goslitizdat. This edition includes all 37 plays that make up the "Shakespearean canon", which corresponds to the contents of the first edition of Shakespeare's works in 1623. 

In addition, the publication includes poems and sonnets by Shakespeare, as well as several cycles of lyric poems, the authorship of which is traditionally attributed to him. 

Thus, Volume I contains comedies, the action of which does not take place on Italian soil; volume II - Italian comedies; volumes III-IV - chronicles; Volume V - four of Shakespeare's most famous, so-called "great" tragedies; volume VI - tragedies on ancient themes of a historical nature; volume VII - ancient and pseudo-antique plays with a fictional plot (this also includes a play that stands somewhat apart in Shakespeare’s work - “Measure for Measure”); volume VIII - three "dramas" or "tragicomedies" relating to the last years of Shakespeare's work, as well as his poems, sonnets and lyric works. 

Notes are divided into two categories: semantic, helping to directly understand the text, and textual or historical-literary. The first are placed in the text, the second are included in the commentary. These comments, consisting of general information about each play (text, dating and first performances, sources, time of action) and explanations of the text, are purely for reference.
