The "History of a City" by Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889) was called "a libel on the history of the Russian state" by his contemporaries. This book remains relevant in our time, being, in fact, not a merciless sentence of "Russian reality", a ruthless surgical operation that opens and heals the "ulcers" of society.

The book also includes the chronicles "Poshekhonskaya antiquity", which tells about the writer's childhood, spent in a landowner's estate under serfdom. This is the last work of Saltykov-Shchedrin, the greatest Russian democratic writer, the most witty and profound satirist.
