The monograph “Ludwig van Beethoven” by A. A. Alschwang is an essay on the life and work of the great German composer, who played an extremely important role in the history of world musical culture. Being an independent musicological study, which reflects the author's views on the problems of Beethoven's style and provides a scientific analysis of Beethoven's most important works, the monograph is intended at the same time for a wide range of readers - both professionals and music lovers.
The first edition of the monograph was published in 1952. In subsequent years, publications of translations of the book into Hungarian (Budapest, 1954), Estonian (Tallinn, 1957), and Romanian (Bucharest, 1960) languages appeared. The monograph is used as a manual for studying courses in the history of music and musical literature in conservatories, music schools, and universities of culture.
In preparing the second edition of the book, the author revised it, further developed sections covering Beethoven’s era, and expanded the chapter containing an analysis of the composer’s latest works.
