Stories 1923-1938 / autolithographs by E. Kibrik
In publisher's leather binding
Lifetime edition by Zoshchenko
In Literaturnaya Gazeta No. 36 for 1940, the book was presented as follows: “In the near future, the anniversary edition of Mikhail’s stories will go on sale. Zoshchenko “Dear Citizens”, published by the publishing house “Soviet Writer”. The book includes the best works of Zoshchenko and is, as it were, a creative report of the writer for fifteen years of work - from 1923 to 1938. The publication is beautifully designed and illustrated with autolithographs by Evgeniy Kibrik.
The collection includes the famous “Bathhouse”, “Aristocrat”, “The Delights of Culture”, “Nervous People”, “Yolka”, as well as the story “A Funny Adventure”, which became the basis of one of the three short story of Leonid Gaidai’s film “It Can’t Be!”
The book occupies a prominent place among the lifetime publications of Mikhail Mikhailovich Zoshchenko (1894–1958), that “first” bright, sparkling Zoshchenko, who existed until 1946, when the writer was expelled from the Writers' Union. Then, at the beginning of 1946, he published three books at once, and in August the publications stopped. The next two collections of stories and feuilletons were published only in 1956 and 1958. and became the last books published during Zoshchenko’s lifetime.
The stories are decorated with autolithographs by Evgeniy Adolfovich Kibrik (1906–1078), artist, graphic artist, book illustrator. His most significant works include illustrations for de Coster’s novel “The Legend of Ulenspiegel” (1938), Gogol’s story “Taras Bulba” (1945), the Russian “Heroic Epics” (1950) and Pushkin’s “Boris Godunov” (1964).
