Reason and human wisdom have always been used as weapons to attack the gospel of Christ. Ever since the time of Cain, the most significant and wise men on earth - eminent theologians and philosophers - have taken the side of human wisdom and worshiped at its altar. Man's ability to think, his mind, is undoubtedly a great and even "greatest and extremely important" gift of God to man, "a very useful tool in theology." Reason as such cannot simply be excluded from the Christian life. But still, before he can really enter into it, he must be transformed from judge to humble novice, from master to slave, from professor to disciple, or, more precisely, from heathen to Christian.
Indeed, many in the Bible contradicts what we know from other sources. (How many of us have personally witnessed the resurrection of a man who died four days ago?) But at the same time, biblical teachings are by no means "contrary to reason." The mind is able to perceive the message that is available in the Bible in ordinary human language. The problem, however, is not the message, but the fallen man himself who rejects it precisely because he understood it. Therefore, reason, in order to become an instrument of God, must first of all submit to faith.
The author of this work succeeded in what many could not do, namely, to show the true place of reason in historical Lutheran theology. To a modern sage, this will no doubt appear, and must appear, to be exceedingly "unwise." But still, "the foolishness of God is wiser than men" (1 Corinthians 1:25). On this "non-wise", that is, on true wisdom, our faith is based.
