The publication is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of A.P. Chekhov and the 85th anniversary of A.V. Efrosa

The book opens a three-volume edition dedicated to Chekhov's productions by the outstanding Russian theater director Anatoly Efros (1925-1987). The first volume includes documents and materials related to his interpretations of the play "The Seagull" in cinema, theater, classes with students.

From the introductory article by A. Smelyansky:

How the new Chekhov began

The book is called “Anatoly Efros. "Gull". The reader should at least be surprised: with all due respect to the wonderful director, he did not create the play "The Seagull". However, the title fits the essence of the book. A. Efros did not write the play "The Seagull", but in 1966 he composed a performance based on this play at the Lenin Komsomol Theater. He returned Chekhov to a field of heightened meaning... He let his own and our common life into The Seagull... He put into The Seagull his understanding of the theater, which polemically opposed the whole experience of the paused, lulling, safe and contentless-distant Chekhov: the latter was a direct consequence of "deactivation" of the writer, which was carried out by the combined efforts of the Soviet school, many Soviet Chekhov experts and many Soviet theaters. Efros made a breakthrough. And if we agree that the most important polemical interpretations of the classics (including Chekhov) eventually enter and become inseparable from the very content of the play, enriching its semantic core, then Efros can be named among the co-authors of the playwright. This is how I interpret the title of this book, or, more precisely, the collection prepared by Nonna Skegina, Anatoly Efros's longtime lover.

The book contains everything that can be collected in connection with Chekhov's "The Seagull" and director Efros.... But the most important discovery of the book is the publication of recordings of the rehearsals of Lenkom's The Seagull. These recordings represent what was happening in the Russian Soviet theater at a turning point in its history... Recordings of the rehearsals of "The Seagull" were then made by Inessa Sidorina and Nelli Plyatskovskaya. They were made with exemplary accuracy and a subtle understanding of the hero, whom they wrote down for themselves, but it turned out - for history.

The book “Anatoly Efros. "The Seagull" presents director Efros in contemporary theatrical Russia at the moments of his inspired creation of "his own Chekhov".

The book about "The Seagull" begins Anatoly Efros' "Chekhov series". Chekhov's cycle of Efros stretched out for many years. It began at the end of the "thaw" and continued into the most remote Soviet years. The director's life ended in January 1987, so he was not destined to see Chekhov in the interior of the new Russia. But the main thing was done by him: it is impossible to imagine modern Chekhov without what Anatoly Efros “read” into his plays. And it was done - forever.
