The author of the book is the son of an American diplomat, translator, participant in World War II, high-ranking CIA officer, for 25 years he was a resident abroad in many countries. In the last years of his career, having received a master's degree in psychology, he studied personal affairs and talked with many defector spies from the USSR who worked after the war in the 1950s and 1960s for the intelligence of the United States and Great Britain: O. Penkovsky, P. Popov, Yu. Nosenko and other secret agents not named in this book. The purpose of Hart's research is to study the psychology of betrayal, to identify the reasons that forced certain Soviet GRU officers to commit treason to their homeland, and to develop recommendations for CIA officers on recruiting such people in the future.
The book contains interesting conclusions of a professional American intelligence officer about the activities of US intelligence and counterintelligence against Russia during the period when many countries combined their efforts to prevent global terrorism.
