The book by Giurgi Bartlett is dedicated to the phenomenon of "socialist fashion". Fashion can indeed be called a ghost that terrified the Soviet state. An ephemeral, eternally incomplete and elusive phenomenon was a serious threat to the values of socialism - stability, lack of change and predictability. Originating in the era of Stalinism, this phenomenon lasted until the end of the 1980s in the Soviet Union and in a number of Eastern European countries that were part of the social bloc. For all its exclusivity, it was by no means the fundamentally new style that the constructivists dreamed of in the early 1920s. On the contrary, socialist fashion was officially oriented towards traditional aesthetics and catered to conservative gender stereotypes. Bartlett traces the history of the phenomenon - from its inception in the era of the collapse of the Bolshevik utopian dream to its heyday in Eastern European countries with the coming of the Communists to power in 1948 and the gradual decline in the last decades of the existence of the socialist system. Bartlett's research focuses on the vestimentary experiments of the constructivists, the early Bolshevik critique of fashion as a bourgeois phenomenon, the return to the ideals of traditional femininity in the Stalin era, the institutionalization of fashion and the formation of the ideological construct of the "official socialist costume" (with an almost complete absence of any decent clothing on store shelves), festivals and competitions designed to support the myth of the existence of socialist fashion, as well as unofficial fashion practices that the "man of the scarcity era" had to resort to.
