Some sharpness of color and linear clarity (`Poet`, 1913, `Laundresses`, 1920 - both in the State Tretyakov Gal.) give way from 1923-25 to freer picturesqueness, from 1930-31 to simplification of form and composition and blackness reaching primitivism colors (`Passer-by`, 1932, State Tretyakov Gallery, monotype `Two Girls`, 1932, State Museum of Fine Arts). From the end of 1932, blackness is replaced by a light and cheerful tone. Despite the abstract-formalist searches, the paintings of Sh. are distinguished by their invariable simplicity and completeness of composition. In terms of mastery of color and texture, Sh. is one of the most significant Soviet painters. d-hood-play
